PC Gamer's New Podcast is Already Climbing the iTunes Charts

(September 29, 2005)

Weekly Podcast Lures Gaming Luminaries Sid Meier, Chris Taylor, Matt Boone and John Morello

Brisbane, CA – At just one month old, PC Gamer magazine’s weekly Podcast has already scaled the iTunes chart to the #17 position, ahead of ABC News, Major League Baseball, CNN and the President’s Weekly Radio Address.

Hosted by the merry band of hugely-popular PC Gamer editors – Dan Morris, Greg Vederman and D.J. Stapleton – the 45-minute Podcasts have featured live interviews with some of the top names in the computer gaming world: Firaxis’ Sid Meier (Civilization), Gas Powered Games’ Chris Taylor (Dungeon Siege, Total Annihilation), and Valve’s Matt Boone and John Morello (Day of Defeat).

The PC Gamer Podcast can be downloaded from www.pcgamer.com, iTunes, Feedburner, Podnova, and Odeo. Here’s what’s drawing in hardcore gamers around the world:

• EPISODE 1: An interview with esteemed game designer Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games. We discuss his newly released Dungeon Siege II, and look ahead to his long-awaited return to the RTS genre, Supreme Commander. We also pose the question on everyone’s mind: will he make a cameo in next year’s Dungeon Siege movie? We also give our perspective on the week’s top news stories, and discover that one of us can’t handle the learning curve in Battlefield 2.

• EPISODE 2: We review some more crazy MMO news out of China, discuss the departure of Electronic Arts’ Don Mattrick, and check in with “The Vede” about his trip to Microsoft’s future-of-Windows event, Meltdown 2005. We also go round the horn, talk about some playlists, and discover some very worrisome information about DJ’s dating record.

• EPISODE 3: Sid Meier, one of the original Game Gods, with whom we discuss the nearly-gold Civilization IV, the future of his development house Firaxis, and his games’ ongoing effect on the academic community. We also discuss the imminent release of Age of Empires III, homebrew software on the Sony PSP, the upcoming Battlefield 2 patch, and current headlines. Plus for the first time ever, listener questions are played on the air and discussed.

• EPISODE 4: Matt Boone and John Morello of Valve, designers of Day of Defeat: Source. We discuss their journey from obscure modders to official Valve employees, the challenges of managing a team over the Internet, and what players should expect from the new Source edition of the game. We also answer a slew of listener MP3 questions, discuss our current gaming addictions, and DJ wonders out loud about Crytek’s new intellectual property, “Par Fry.”
